Keep your machine(s) up to date. It's relatively simple and you really only need to do it once a month. The 2nd Tuesday of every month at 2PM EST is when MS releases new updates. If you haven't done it in a while, leave it running in the background. Check for updates until you get the "There are no updates available" message. Once you do that, go to your %WINDOWS%/SoftwareDistribution/Downloads folder and delete everything in there. Empty the recycle bin, run disk cleanup, and check everything, including Windows Update cleanup. Less updates messages, more disk space, and a happily running, safe machine.

Macs feel like toys compared to Windows PCs, frankly. Same with Android phones to iPhones.

Made even easier in Windows 8/8.1 since it gives you 3 fucking days to restart your machine. Or just shut it down and boot it back up again. That works too.

I'd say you'd get LINUX faster though. :)

Also NEVER plug an un-updated Windows machine directly into a cable modem. That's a quick way to kill your computer. Make sure you're behind NAT before running updates.

I usually just let windows install updates as they come, but edit the registry such that the update process can't reboot the computer. That 's really the annoying part.

it's an unwinnable argument. I accept that there are people who prefer one over the other and leave it at that.
I'm PC/Android right now, but if you took that away and gave me all apple stuff I would be fine in like a day.
And I only ended up on this path because of the early days of the MP3 player. I didn't like the idea that iPods had to be chained to itunes when nearly all the competition got allowed mass storage device & drag/drop protocols.

Well I used to be an Apple person, but then I noticed their products becoming crap so I switched to PC/Android.

Nah, you'll be fine. You should always be behind a NAT, but we're long past the days of Windows not coming with a default Firewall turned on.
That hasn't been a problem since XP SP2.

I'd set it to the 3rd Tuesday and let others have a week to make sure MS didn't release a dud.

With as much stuff being web-based now, the hardware itself is so much less relevant beyond the obvious factors like RAM. Apple used to be the sole possessor of the aesthetics edge, but now even Dell makes some pretty nice looking stuff. Not to mention the slew of other brands.
I also really used to like building my own computers because it was fun, and I could hand-select the components to suit my exact need and budget. Now I think there's very little in the way of saving money when you build your own, and even then I was only doing it for the purposes of gaming. I've completely surrendered to consoles at this point, for as little gaming time as I actually do anymore. Plus consoles have so much functionality outside of games, and in ways that my wife actually would approve of.
I'd have to spend $2 to 3k to build an HTPC that would control my living room in a spouse-friendly manner and do everything I want it to. But I would need to win the lottery first, and I'd have lots of cars to buy before I work down the wish list to home theater.

Why empty the %WINDOWS%/SoftwareDistribution/Downloads folder ? Just wondering...
![]() 02/13/2015 at 16:08 |

Once the updates are installed, you really don't need their installers. Delete that shit, can save 1-2GB of space.

Ah. Thanks...I had about 200 MB of crap in there.

I installed updated on a server the other day. It wanted a reboot so I did. Now, here I am 48 hours later wondering why the fuck I have to go to work tomorrow to reload the OS and reconfigure the domain controller.

hey this is a good tip seeing all those updates and their huge file sizes make my 120GB ssd nervous. I am glad to be rid of them.

It isn't, sadly. The only difference is that the Big Mick doesn't have sesame seeds on the bun.
